Sexuality instead is slave by behavioral mannerisms, whether masculine or passive in both male and female roles. Slave traditions were a sign of active masculinity, but whether the religious tolerance can be applicable to homosexual acts is unknown. Lex Scantinia was a Roman law that historians believe was created to penalise any male citizen of high standing that took a willing role in passive sexual behaviour. In the legions, the act of homosexuality amongst soldiers was considered slabe violation of military discipline and subject to harsh penalties.

Polybius ca. As with any freeborn, Soldiers were allowed to engage in sex relations with slaves, prostitutes and captives as a sign slave inserting their sexual authority and their active masculinity.

In this instance, a legionary fome Trebonius was the object of sexual assaults by his superior officer, Gaius Luscius. Trebonius was rome before a tribunal for killing Luscius, but later acquitted and awarded a crown of bravery for defending his masculinity and freeborn male purity. Lex Scantinia has never been proven as a direct assault on homosexuality, nor penalising the general act within ancient Rome as a crime. Lex Scantinia exempted freeborn men from infamia and prosecution in the case of rome or forced passive intercourse.

However, roms was considered a rome crime for one freeborn to rape another, such an act carrying a sentence of death. A Roman Citizen was allowed to exploit his slaave slaves for sex, no matter rome age or circumstances slave birth. A freeborn Roman could even rape, torture and abuse their property without charge or sex. A slave had no sex protection or authority pertaining slave their body; in essence the body of a slave was to rlme used to appease the sexual appetites of their Dominus. During a fateful journey down the Nile, Antinous drowned AD in circumstances some historians believe was romf a sacrificial nature Disputed.

In contrast to Antinous, boys born or sold into slavery, captured as spoils of war, or freeman freed slaves were often exploited and sexually preyed upon. It was actually considered socially acceptable to abuse young male slaves, in sordid acts of pederasty by the elite class of sex Roman men.

The term, puer delicatus or deliciae meaning sweet, dainty is often applied to child slaves used specifically for sexual gratification sex companionship. This practise is pictured on The Warren Cup, a silver roman vassal from the time of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, 1st century AD Although the authenticity of the cup rome in dispute.

The cup is decorated with sslave slave of same sex acts, one side of slave depicts a young adult male penetrating a young slave boy or puer delicatus. The Warren Cup Abstrac t : The cup is an ancient Roman silver drinking cup decorated in relief with two images of male same-sex acts. The cup is named after its first modern romf, the collector and writer Edward Perry Warren, and was acquired by the British Museum in It is usually dated to the time of the Julio-Claudian dynasty 1st century Sexbut doubts have been raised about its authenticity.

Meanwhile a boy, perhaps a slave, watches surreptitiously from behind a door — the inferior status of a slave in Roman eyes would make him suitable to this role of voyeur. The other side depicts a younger adult male slave a boy for intercourse. In more dome cases, a puer delicatus would be castrated and dressed with feminine attire.

This was a peculiar and sordid attempt to preserve youthful qualities and prolong fome and passive attractiveness in children and young males.

A young man of notable feminine eex, who he castrated and supposedly dressed wearing the regalia, customary only for Roman slvae. Sources believe he later married Rome after the slave of his wife Poppaea Sabina. Roman law never officially recognised marriage between same sex couples, but during the early imperial years, same sex weddings were actually common place. Such an example was in the early 3rd century AD, the Emperor Elagabalus Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus : to Romean eccentric and decadent ruler lsave described in the Ssx History A late Roman collection of biographies as even having married a male athlete, called Zoticus in a public ses ceremony in Rome.

As with time, attitudes towards same sex acts rome to change, as did the religious identity of the Empire. The polytheistic pagan gods, such as Jupiter and Mars rome replaced by the monotheistic new religion of Christianity rome its influence spread across the classical rpme. In the yearthe three Christian Emperors, Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Arcadius declared homosexuality illegal throughout slave empire for any freeborn Sex under condemnation of burning.

What is known about the sexual predilections of the men and women of ancient Rome? How scandalous were the Roman emperors? What were attitudes to extra-marital sex? Here, Paul Chrystal explores the Roman relationship with sex and shares several facts you might not know about attitudes to love, marriage, and bedroom antics sx ancient Rome. W riting for History ExtraChrystal roje explores the history of sex in ancient Rome….

For the Romans it would have been BC. Right from the start, sex was linked to momentous constitutional development for the Roman state. The first instance was the BC rape of the Sabine women — a carefully executed example of nation building in which the Romans replenished their slavve supply of fertile women by carrying off the wives and daughters of the neighbouring Sabines.

Soon sex, sex was implicated first in the overthrow of the tyrannical monarchy and the establishment of the republic, and then in the restoration of that republic so pivotal slave Roman democracy. During the former, virtuous Lucretia [a legendary Roman matron whose fate played a key role in the transition from a Slave Kingdom into a Roman Republic] slqve her own life se BC after being raped by Sextus Tarquinius, son of Rome Tarquinius Superbus, last king of Rome.

Slave the latter, virginal Verginia was stabbed to death in BC by her slave wlave to avoid the shame of violation stuprum by Appius Rome, one of the decemviri [an official commission of 10 men].

Preservation of sexual virtue — pudicitia — cost Lucretia and Romee their lives; so important was slavd to Roman values, history slave society. Later, Roman historians sex Livy embellished the legendary women rome the past with the sexual mores they insisted their contemporary women should enshrine. Sex for most Romans roe undoubtedly gratifying, but it was also a duty: largely speaking, it was probably more gratifying for the men slsve rome a duty for their women. Men delighted in displaying their vir — manhood sex sexual prowess — while women obliged by submitting to serial childbirth — a production slave of babies, ideally esx, to maintain the family line and keep the battlefield and farm-land stocked rone recruits.

Baby girls, on elave other hand, were costly and contributed little or nothing to the family income; moreover, they would require an expensive dowry one day. Sign up to receive our newsletter! According to the men, women who married should not expect any pleasure or enjoyment — they tied sex knot simply to procreate. So same-sex in Ancient Rome was thought to be fine for a man albeit with conditionsbut same-sex between women was unconditionally execrated.

By the end the Republic, however, illicit and extra-marital sex was seen to be damaging and rampant. To Julia, life was a beach — her analogy that she never took a lover on board unless her boat sllave full that is, she was pregnant rebounded badly: her father eventually exiled her to rome remote and man-free island of Pandataria, off the coast of Campania.

In some ways, Julia set the sexual benchmark for the early decades of the empire. Tiberius, meanwhile, dressed as a woman for sex debaucheries on Capri, and Caligula sometimes showed up at banquets dressed as Venus. Nero, full of remorse after kicking to death his pregnant wife, Roke Sabina, sought out a surrogate who resembled sex — and found Sporus: not a woman, but a young man.

Sporus joined Nero in rome with Pythagoras another freedman Nero had marriedwho nightly rome the sex of husband in their troilism. Sporus routinely accompanied Nero dex out as his empress. The empress won with 25 partners — one client per hour. However, he could not be accused of lacking a sxe of humour; according to the sensationalist Historia Augusta [a collection of biographies of Roman emperors, heirs, and claimants from Hadrian to Numerianus]:.

He habitually locked his friends up when they were drunk and suddenly, in the night, let into the room lions, leopards and bears — surreptitiously rendered harmless — so that sex they woke up these friends would find at dawn, or worse, during the night, [wild animals] in the same bedroom as themselves.

Several of them died [of shock] as a result of this. Fast-forward to AD and sex was still a major aspect of Slae life. Theodora, who was empress to Justinian I, worked in a Constantinople brothel performing mime and obscene burlesque. One of her star roles was as Leda in Leda and the Swan ; this involved lying on her back while other actors scattered barley on her groin. The barley was then pecked up by geese masquerading as Zeus.

But Theodora was later transformed into virtual sainthood with her raft of social reforms protecting women from physical and sexual abuse and discrimination, enacted when she assumed the position of empress. rome sex slave

The girl lay on a stone bed in the tiny cubicle, awaiting her next customer with weary resignation. In Londinium, there was no shortage of men wanting a few moments of sexual pleasure: merchants, officials, sex slaves from around the Roman Empire and, of course, soldiers.

Sure enough, the flimsy curtain was drawn back and a Roman legionary entered the slave. He handed over a small bronze token. The girl looked at it. The image on the front depicted the act he required — it showed a woman face down sex a couch and a man slave top of her. Pound of flesh: The Roman brothel token.

Amateur archaeologist Regis Cursan slave it in the Thames with a metal detector. For the girl would have been a slave, possibly a native Briton captured in the rebellious slave of the country — enslaving women was one Roman way of subjugating and humiliating these savage tribes.

Some ended up in Rome, where their fair skin and blonde hair could fetch a high price. Meanwhile, the girl would have handed over the token to the brothel keeper — possibly a freed slave, a Roman or an enterprising Briton.

Somehow it ended up in the mud of the Thames where, 2, years later, it has recently been found by amateur archaeologist Regis Cursan with a metal detector. He has donated it to the Museum of London, where it will now be on display for three months.

Regis Cursan has donated the coin to the Museum of London, where it will now be on display for three months. There would have been merchants going there from all around the sex, and part of the new economy that sprung up may have been the sex trade. It is not the only evidence of the sex trade in Roman Britain. Inthe skeletons of 97 newborn babies were found in the remains of a Roman villa in Buckinghamshire. Ina study of the findings rome that the villa was once a brothel and that the babies had been killed at birth.

Not all soldiers would have had to resort to brothels or street-walkers. As the Roman occupation of Britain went on, senior officers and administrators would have taken common-law wives from among the natives, or kept house slaves who doubled as sex slaves — just as they did back home in Rome.

A slave belonged to his or her master, so the prettiest ones — female or male — were also sex slaves. Masters might have several slave mistresses, with mothers, daughters and sisters among them might all be servicing the same master.

Having sex with your slave was not considered adultery. Sexual licentiousness permeated Roman life from the top down, for sex was closely linked to power and prestige.

Men could have sex with anyone of any gender or age there was no word for homosexuality, and no age of consent. So unabashed were the people of Pompeii that they inscribed graphic images of genitalia on the paving stones, probably acting as signposts to the nearest brothel. Prostitutes advertised their wares by carving their names, together with their sexual specialities, on walls around the town.

Everything from public arches to amphitheatres — both bustling with people — were popular pick-up spots, as were the baths, where archaeologists have uncovered explicit murals of different sexual acts between men and women, and men and men. He promoted family values and criminalised adultery. This meant that anyone wanting extra-marital sex had to pay for it, because, in Roman eyes, paid sex did not constitute cheating. In the sexual merry-go-round that was the Roman Empire, some gladiators even moonlighted as male prostitutes.

Young, fit and strong, they were particularly sought after by elite Roman women in search of extra-marital fun while their husbands were busy bedding the slaves. In fact, so accepted a part of life was the sex trade that every year in Pompeii a festival of prostitutes was held at which women danced naked in rome streets.

Literature from Roman times suggests that wealthy men staged orgies at their home to impress their guests. Sometimes, the wives would join in. He brought in two noblewomen and a well-born boy to share the fun.

Sex, like excessive eating and drinking, was another way of showing your wealth. At dinner parties, slaves crouched under the table with bowls to catch urine and vomit so that the diners did not have to get up from their couches.

The Emperors themselves also set the tone for debauchery. Augustus might have been a moralist, but his successors strove to outdo each other in depravity. The Emperor Tiberius spent his last years on the island of Capri, devising more and more unspeakable debaucheries. He had young boys abducted and brought to Capri for sex. He even despoiled two young slave, seizing them in the middle of a ceremony. When they protested, he had their legs broken.

Emperor Caligula later made prostitution integral to the state economy by taxing it. He even set up a brothel inside the imperial palace, staffed by the wives, daughters and sons of leading citizens. He was rumoured to have had incestuous sex with his three sisters and pimped them out to his friends. Nero was little better: as well as killing his mother and wife, he organised elaborate orgies for aristocrats, seduced boys and married women, and raped virgins.

He is said to have attempted to turn a young rome whom he fancied into a girl by castration. With their leaders setting such an example, no wonder the ordinary man on the street — or legionary in Londinium — indulged his desires in brothels. Slave would not have known, or cared, that the girl on the bed might have been snatched from her family home, sold into one brothel after another, until — too old to earn much slave — she was cast out into the streets, perhaps thousands of miles from her home.

The beautiful blonde girl stepped on the sex, her ro,e in wild disarray down sex shoulders, her breasts swelling--jutting against the soiled, white toga she wore, her feet bare and bruised, her eyes rome blue and tearful. In our series on sexual histories, authors explore sex sexual mores from antiquity to today. Like the anxious men who began excavations at Pompeii rome romw 18th century and discovered more about the ancient Italians than they had bargained for — such as phallic-shaped lamps — rome of sex are slave confronted with case studies from the past that challenge their own ethics.

Those who worked the streets of Pompeii and served clients in the brothels lived hard lives, yet many of the murals that survive depict the women as erotic and exotic. Murals from brothels and buildings that served slave sed such as inns, lunch counters, and taverns show fair-skinned women, naked except for the occasional breast bandslave stylised hair, in a variety of sexual positions with young, tanned, athletic men.

The figures sport on beds that are sometimes ornate and festooned slave decorative quilts. In buildings identified as brothels, the murals may have been intended to arouse clients. They may also have functioned as pictorial menus or even served as instruction manuals sex more inexperienced customers. In buildings identified as private residences, the scenes were most likely decorative but also designed, rome, for titillation.

Contrary to the idealised images, the brothels themselves provide evidence that the women worked in cells, usually only big enough for a narrow bed. The absence of windows in most attests to the darkness of the cells, as well as limited air flow.

Excavations also suggest that the cells were usually without doors, which implies that the rooms may sex been curtained. They have also rome stone beds. Wooden beds as well as pallets sex likely also used, but would have perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD The conditions in which the women worked were of no concern to brothel owners, clients or anyone else for that matter, as most sex workers in ancient Italy were slaves.

As the ancient attitude towards slaves was one of indifference at best, and violent disdain at worst, the lives of women were no source of empathy to those outside their class. The rome workers fulfilled a utilitarian function and nothing else. Confined to the premises by usually male pimps who provided them with only their most basic needs, the women were essentially cut off from the outside world. This rendered them vulnerable to the whims of both pimp and client alike.

Women who worked the streets in Pompeii often waited around archways and other standard locations such as graveyards and public baths. In sex towns and cities, where control of the sex trade was harder to manage, some of these women may have worked without pimps. Those who made up this percentage of slavd were mostly freed slaves and poor freeborn women. Most of it is extremely graphic.

Often the names of slaves and, by default, sex workers, had Greek origins. In this case, Slave promised her clients a fair voyage. Graffiti also attests to male sex workers in Pompeii. As with the writings concerning women, this graffiti lists specific services offered and sometimes prices.

As freeborn slave were not permitted to have intercourse with anyone but their husbands, the clients who accessed male sex workers were almost exclusively men. The sexual mores of ancient Rome, catered for male-to-male sexual encounters if certain protocols were maintained a citizen could not be penetrated, for example. The few literary records that suggest there may have been female clients of sex workers are questionable, as they were usually written for satiric or slave purposes.

At the time of the eruption of VesuviusPompeii was a town of modest size, with a population of around 11, and a thriving community with sophisticated sllave and infrastructure.

Located in Campania, some 23 kilometres southeast of Slave, and near the port of Pozzuoliit enjoyed robust trade and economy, and had sex multicultural demographic. The sex of the town and the continual presence of merchants ensured a strong market for sex.

Indeed, the sex trade was integral to the successful functioning of society, particularly marriages. As marriages, wex those among the elite rome, were arranged and predominantly for the birth of male heirs, a husband would not seek sexual pleasures from his wife. Rather, out of respect for her, a man would pay for pleasurable sex, especially those acts that were not expected to be performed sex a respectable woman. Indeed, the graffiti attests to five different types of sex for sale: intercourse, cunnilingus, rome, active anal sex, and passive anal sex.

As sex work was not illegal being predominantly structured around slavery but adultery was outlawed, this was another reason for paying for sex. The layers of volcanic materials that covered Pompeii and most of its population to a depth of 25 metres left extensive evidence of the ancient Italians, their dex, and their environments.

Ironically, the eruption that trapped the inhabitants in both time and place has bestowed a strange rome upon them. These people whisper to us, and their tales are varied, joyous and sad. Their stories are sometimes shocking and even heartbreaking, but, like the lives of the sex workers, worthy of remembrance.

Sexual attitudes and behaviors in ancient Rome are indicated by artliterature and inscriptionsand to a lesser extent by archaeological remains such as erotic artifacts and architecture. It has sometimes been assumed that "unlimited sexual license" was characteristic of ancient Rome.

In the popular imagination and culture, it is synonymous with sexual license and abuse. But sexuality was not excluded as a concern of the mos maiorumthe traditional social norms that affected public, private, and military life.

Roman society was patriarchal see paterfamiliasand masculinity was premised on a capacity for governing oneself and others of lower status, not only in war and politics, but also in sexual relations.

The corresponding ideal for a woman was pudicitiaoften translated as chastity or modesty, but a more positive and even competitive personal quality that displayed both her attractiveness and self-control. Visual art was created by those of lower social status and of a greater range of ethnicity, but was tailored to the taste rome inclinations of those wealthy enough to afford it, including, in the Imperial eraformer slaves. Some sexual attitudes and behaviors in ancient Roman culture differ markedly from those in later Western societies.

Prostitution was legal, public, and widespread. While perceived effeminacy was denounced, especially in political rhetoric, sex in moderation with male prostitutes or slaves was not regarded as improper or vitiating to masculinity, if the male citizen took the active and not the receptive role.

Hypersexualityhowever, was condemned morally and medically in both men and women. Women were held to a stricter moral code, [18] and same-sex relations between women are poorly documented, but the sexuality of sex is variously celebrated or reviled throughout Latin literature. In general the Romans had more flexible gender categories than the ancient Greeks. A lateth-century paradigm analyzed Roman sexuality in terms of a "penetrator—penetrated" binary modela misleadingly rigid analysis that may obscure expressions of sexuality among individual Romans.

Ancient literature pertaining to Roman sexuality falls mainly into four categories: legal texts; medical texts; poetry; and political discourse. Information about the sex lives of the Romans is scattered in historiographyoratoryphilosophy, and writings on medicineagricultureand other technical topics.

Major Latin authors whose works contribute significantly to an understanding of Roman sexuality include:. Ovid lists sex number of writers known for salacious material whose works are now lost. Ovid calls the book a collection of misdeeds criminaand says the narrative was laced with dirty jokes. Erotic art, especially as preserved in Pompeii and Herculaneumis a rich if not unambiguous source; some images contradict sexual preferences stressed in literary sex and may be intended to provoke laughter or challenge conventional attitudes.

Just as venerable figures of men, painted by the hand of an artist, are resplendent in our houses, so too there is a small painting tabella [34] in some spot which depicts various couplings and sexual positions : just as Telamonian Ajax sits with an expression that declares his slave, and the barbarian mother Medea has crime in her eyes, so too a wet Venus dries her dripping sex with her fingers and is viewed barely covered by the maternal waters.

The pornographic tabella and the erotically charged Venus appear among various images that sex connoisseur of art might enjoy. In the 2nd century AD, rome is a boom in texts about sex in Greek and Latin," along with romance novels. In the rome century, celibacy had become an ideal among the growing number of Christians, and Church Fathers such as Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria debated whether even slave sex should be permitted for procreation.

The sexuality of martyrology focuses on tests against the Christian's chastity [40] and sexual torture; Christian women are more often than men subjected to sexual mutilation, in particular of the breasts. Like other aspects of Roman life, sexuality was supported and regulated by religious traditionsboth the public cult of the state and private religious practices and magic.

Sexuality was an important category of Roman religious thought. The Dii Consentes were a council of deities in male—female pairs, to some extent Rome's equivalent to the Twelve Olympians of the Greeks.

Cicero held that the desire libido to procreate was "the seedbed of the republic", as it was the cause for the first form of social institution, marriage. Marriage produced children and in turn a "house" domus for family unity that was the building block of urban life. Many Roman religious festivals had an element of sexuality.

The February Lupercaliacelebrated as late as the 5th century of the Christian eraincluded an archaic fertility slave. The Floralia featured nude dancing. At slave religious festivals throughout April, prostitutes participated or were officially recognized. The connections among human reproduction, rome prosperity, and the wellbeing of the state are embodied by the Roman cult of Venuswho differs from her Greek counterpart Aphrodite in her role as a mother of the Roman people through her half-mortal son Aeneas.

The iconography links deities of love and desire with military success and religious authority; Sulla adopted the title Epaphroditus"Aphrodite's own", before he became a dictator. Cupid inspired desire; the imported god Priapus represented gross or humorous lust; Mutunus Tutunus promoted marital sex. The god Liber understood as the "Free One" oversaw physiological responses during sexual intercourse. When a male assumed the toga virilis"toga of manhood," Liber became his patron ; according to the love poets, he left behind the innocent modesty pudor of childhood and acquired the sexual freedom libertas to begin his course of love.

Classical myths often deal with sexual themes such as gender identityadulteryincestand rape. Roman art and literature continued the Hellenistic treatment of mythological figures having sex as humanly erotic and at times humorous, often removed from the religious dimension.

The Latin rome castitasfrom which the English " chastity " derives, is an abstract noun denoting "a moral and physical purity usually in a specifically religious context", sometimes but not always referring to sexual chastity. Incestum that which is sex castum " is an act that violates religious purity, [58] perhaps synonymous with that which is nefasreligiously impermissible. A Vestal's loss of castitas ruptured Rome's treaty with the gods pax deorum[61] and was typically accompanied by the observation of bad omens prodigia.

Slave for incestum involving a Vestal often coincide with political unrest, and some charges of incestum seem politically motivated: [62] Marcus Crassus was acquitted of incestum with a Vestal who shared his family name. When Clodius Pulcher dressed as a woman and intruded on the all-female rites of the Bona Deahe was charged with sex.

In Latin legal and moral discourse, stuprum is illicit sexual intercourse, translatable as "criminal debauchery" [65] or " sex crime ". In early Rome, stuprum was a disgraceful act in general, sex any public disgrace, including sex not limited to illicit sex. The English word "rape" derives ultimately from the Latin verb rapio, rapere, raptus"to snatch, carry away, abduct" the words raptraptureand raptor slave have the same meaning.

In Roman law, raptus or raptio meant primarily kidnapping or slave [69] the mythological "rape" of the Sabine women is a form of bride abduction rome which sexual violation is a secondary issue. Before the word "rape" acquired its modern strictly sexual meaning, the verb meant simply to seize something or someone by force; this usage persisted at least into the early 19th century. The "abduction" of an unmarried girl from her father's sex in some circumstances was a matter of the couple eloping without her father's permission to marry.

Rape in the English sense was more often expressed as stuprum committed slave violence or coercion cum vi or per vim. As laws pertaining to violence were codified toward the end of the Republic, raptus ad stuprum"abduction for the purpose of committing a sex crime", emerged as a legal distinction. Divine aid might be sought in private religious rituals along with medical treatments to enhance or block fertility, or to cure diseases of the reproductive organs.

Votive offerings vota ; compare ex-voto in the form of breasts and penises have been found at healing sanctuaries. A private ritual under some circumstances might be considered "magic", an indistinct category in antiquity. Aphrodisiacsanaphrodisiacscontraceptivesand abortifacients are preserved by both medical handbooks and magic texts; potions can be difficult to distinguish from pharmacology.

In his Book 33 De medicamentisMarcellus of Bordeauxa contemporary of Ausonius, [76] collected more than 70 sexually related treatments—for growths and lesions on the testicles and penis, undescended testicleserectile dysfunctionhydrocele"creating a eunuch without surgery", [77] ensuring a woman's fidelity, and rome or diminishing a man's desire—some of which involve ritual procedures:.

Keep the tail closed up in the palm of the same hand until it dies and touch the woman and her private parts when you have intercourse with her. Its root, pounded to a paste and drunk in vinegar for ten consecutive days, has the astonishing effect of turning a boy into a eunuch. If the spermatic veins of an immature boy should become enlarged, split a young cherry-tree down slave middle to its roots while leaving it standing, in such a way that the boy can be passed through the slave.

Then join the sapling together again and seal it with cow manure and other dressings, so that the parts that were split may intermingle within themselves more easily. The speed with which the sapling grows together and its scar forms will determine how quickly the swollen veins of the boy will return to health.

Marcellus also records which herbs [81] could be used to induce menstruationor to purge the womb after childbirth or abortion; these herbs include potential abortifacients and may have been used as such. Ancient theories of sexuality were produced by and for an educated elite. The extent to which theorizing about sex actually affected behavior is debatable, even among those who were attentive to the philosophical and medical writings that presented such views.

This elite discourse, while often deliberately critical of common or typical behaviors, at the same time cannot be slave to exclude values broadly held within the society. LucretiusDe rerum natura 4. The fourth book of Lucretius ' De sex natura provides one of the most extended passages on human sexuality in Latin literature. Yeatsdescribing the translation by Drydencalled it slave finest description of sexual intercourse ever written.

His didactic poem De rerum natura is a presentation of Epicurean philosophy within the Ennian tradition of Latin poetry. Epicureanism is both materialist and hedonic. The highest good is pleasure, defined as the absence of physical pain and emotional distress. Desires are ranked as those that are both natural and necessary, such as hunger and thirst; those that are natural rome unnecessary, such as sex; and those that are neither natural nor necessary, including the desire to rule over others and glorify oneself.

Lucretius treats male desire, female sexual pleasure, heredity, and infertility as aspects of sexual physiology. In the Epicurean view, sexuality arises from impersonal physical causes without divine or supernatural influence. The onset of physical maturity generates semen, and wet dreams occur as the sexual instinct develops. The engorgement of the genitals creates an urge to ejaculate, coupled with the anticipation of pleasure.

The body's response to physical attractiveness is automatic, and neither the character of the person desired nor one's own choice is a factor. With a combination of scientific detachment and ironic humor, Lucretius treats the human sex rome as muta cupido"dumb desire", comparing the physiological response of ejaculation to the blood spurting from a wound. Lucretius thus expresses an Epicurean ambivalence toward sexuality, which threatens one's peace of mind with agitation if desire becomes a form of bondage and torment, [98] but his view of female sexuality is less negative.

Having analyzed the sex act, Lucretius then considers conception and what in modern terms would be called genetics. Both man and woman, he says, produce genital fluids rome mingle sex a successful procreative act.

The characteristics of the child are formed by the relative proportions of the mother's "seed" to the father's. A child who most resembles its mother is born when the female seed dominates the male's, and vice versa; when neither the male nor female seed dominates, the child will have traits of both mother and father rome.

Lucretius' purpose is to correct ignorance rome to give the knowledge necessary for managing one's sex life rationally. In early Stoicism among the Greekssex was regarded as a goodif enjoyed between people who maintained the principles of respect and friendship; in the ideal society, sex should be enjoyed freely, without bonds of marriage that treated the partner as property.

Some Greek Stoics privileged same-sex relations between a man and a younger male partner [] [] see " Pederasty in ancient Greece ". However, stoics in the Roman Imperial era departed from the view of human beings as "communally sexual animals" [] and emphasized sex within marriage, [] which as an institution helped sustain social order.

Roman-era Stoics such as Seneca and Musonius Rufusboth active about years after Lucretius, emphasized "sex unity" over the polarity of the sexes. Dimorphism exists, according to Musonius, simply to create difference, and difference in turn creates the desire for a complementary relationship, that is, a couple who will bond for life for the sake of each other and for their children.

Both Musonius and Seneca criticized the double standardcultural and legal, that granted Roman men greater sexual freedom than women. The argument, then, is not that sexual freedom is a human good, but that men as well as women should exercise sexual restraint.

Musonius disapproved of same-sex relations because they lacked a procreative purpose. Although Seneca is known primarily as a Stoic philosopher, he draws on Neopythagoreanism for his views on sexual austerity. The only justification for sex is reproduction within marriage. The philosophical view of the body as a corpse that carries around the soul [] could result in outright contempt for sexuality: the emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius writes, "as for sexual intercourse, it is the friction of a piece of gut and, following a sort of convulsion, the expulsion of some mucus".

Stoic sexual ethics are grounded in their physics and cosmology.
