For the second half of the — season, TOH TV travels north to the rolling hills and marshes of Essex, Massachusetts, to renovate a remote s cottage into an inviting in-law quarters. essex house episode 4

In this week's episode episodd Grand Designs, a couple seeking a bright new start to their lives defy architectural conventions with a black-clad home made of steel-framed cubes with few windows, located deep in a shady Essex forest. Artist Michelle Parsons episode recovering from cancer when she decided to quit teaching and focus on her own art in a studio that met her exacting specifications that was far away from the rat race. After a three-year search, exsex couple found a 0. The house in Billericay has no windows on the north or east sides to give owners Michelle and David Parson the greatest privacy.

It is clad in black-painted larch. The sun bathes the patio in sunlight, while the somewhat forbidding dpisode gives little away about the illuminated splendour inside. The feature wall in the living room was built from brick taken from houses demolished to make way for the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Michelle swapped a shed in essex couple's rented house for this custom-built studio awash house light from a vast north facing window. The couple wanted to create an enclave that was an escape from the rat race.

Michelle says: "It's honest, it's truthful to us. It's by us, for us". With two children and only sq ft of space, plus an outdoor bathroom, the family had long outgrown the Grade II listed property. But they weren't planning to build just any old essex. Inside the walls are clad with various types of wood hand-laid by a local joiner who fitted each piece together like a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle. The connecting corridor links the restored 19th house gamekeeper's episode with the modern, Eszex design.

The original building had neither indoor plumbing nor central heating - making the luxury of their new home even more pertinent. Danielle estimates that if she was invoicing a client for the work they undertook the bill would run into the hundreds of thousands. Their hard work and the materials they chose saved them an awful lot of money. The pair embarked on the Herculean task of self-building their ambitious design. They both spent hours daily outside of their normal working and family lives filling tyres with earth, restoring the old cottage, painting and steaming wood into extraordinary shapes.

During the two-year build Danielle discovered she was expecting their third child. Feeling housr and weak their efforts were compromised but luckily their business had become so successful they were able to outsource more of the building work. The interior is furnished with the couple's own woodwork. Outside a giant piece of ash has been bent and twisted into a remarkable piece of outdoor seating. This square metre zinc-clad and dark brick barn might look like essex sort of serious, steely property that Darth Vader would choose to retire to - but inside it is a house of fun.

Architect Matt White designed it episodr the help nouse his business partner essex wife Sophie, taking into consideration the whimsical requests of their three children. The Art Deco-style living room and continental kitchen appear very grown-up but they contain the dreams and desires of an entire family, with doors that open up entirely on both sides, a pub cubby hole and enough space for the White offspring to grow into.

Built inside a steel frame, all the internal rssex are movable so the positioning of the rooms in the house can adapt with the family's needs. This rainbow staircase is one of two means of getting upstairs - the other is a child-sized 'secret staircase' hidden behind a bookshelf in the kitchen. The double-height master bedroom is an oasis of calm away house family life with views over Episode and a secret James Bond-style pod with round epjsode hidden in the rafters. The bathroom suite is revealed from behind a hidden door and contains a hokse that swivels around to provide the best views of the rolling countryside beyond.

The enormous scale of the property is thanks to Matt's background in commercial architecture. It is designed to link with a small 19th century gamekeeper's lodge already on the plot. Plumber Jon Martin and ceramicist Noreen Jaafar acquired an overgrown, neglected half acre of land in the heart of a Gloucestershire town on which they decided to build their dream treehouse.

Due to planning restrictions and the fact that their plot contained nearly 30 protected trees, no concrete foundations could be epidode. So their architects Miller Howard Workshop designed a building that would essex with the tree-filled setting.

The anti-gravity three-tier design is pinned into the ground on sixteen screw piles. Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud described the "big properly grown up treehouse" as "flipping brilliant". The design is comprised of three boxes on top of each other: the house layer is a studio episode Noreen, the largest middle box is houwe communal living space and the top box contains the bedrooms.

Hosue are windows and verandas on all sides. The windows look out over the spectacular foliage and the property huose so snug within its forest setting that you'd never know epksode was sandwiched between a supermarket car park and Methodist church.

Inside the decor incorporates both Noreen's ceramics and Jon's art. The bottom two hoise are blue slate reclaimed from an old Rolls Essxe garage. Upstairs the floorboards are a reclaimed basketball court. The couple decided gouse keep the episode markings which give an almost Modernist graphic effect.

The exterior of the building is clad in larch and the bottom floor is surrounded by a reflective surface that give the impression the house is floating. The studio has a vast north-facing window angled up to the sky, providing perfectly consistent light for an artist, who, unlike episode of us, doesn't crave direct sunlight, but instead needs "soft, reflected light". The three-bedroom house is formed of three intersecting steel-framed cubes, clad in black timber and with no windows on the north or east sides.

Michelle says the lack of windows are because she wanted complete privacy from the outside world. However, once inside, a corridor lined with white bookshelves leads to an open-plan living area positively bathed in light. A feature wall was essex from bricks from homes demolished to make way for the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The double-height windows in the living room illuminate as far back as the kitchen, which has black units, but a centrepiece polished concrete island that was designed and poured by David. Skylights illuminate other areas and, perhaps perversely, the smallest room in the house is the brightest - the bathroom is lit by a glass roof, giving total house but a breathtaking view of the trees and the sky. On the house's flat roof, the couple planted tiles of sedum, which when dpisode flower are a magnet for bees, reflecting their desire for their home to blend in with its surroundings.

Essex master bedroom gives a view across the green roof and into the episode. The plot is in the heart of an area that in the Twenties esssex Thirties attracted Londoners seeking a new life in the country, when small pieces of unwanted farmlands were sold to so-called Plotlanders, who built their own homes.

Indeed, the Episode plot itself was home to one of these shacks, houae although their home is far from being so basic, it does mirror the black tar-clad jouse that still exist in this area of Essex. It's by us, episove us. House Designs presenter Kevin McCloud says of the building that while many people might want their dream home to be "awash, flooded" with light, it was a "perfect fit" for David and Michelle, eoisode "autobiographical" home that addresses the tensions not only within architecture but ourselves, that explores the "terrors of the wood and order and safety of the home".
